Rose Bowl Game: America's New Year Celebration

Dubbed as "The Granddaddy of Them All," Rose Bowl game is the oldest and most attended American college football bowl game conducted yearly. It is usually played on January 1 (played during Mondays when New Year's Day falls on a Sunday) at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, California as part of the Tournament of Roses, an America's New Year celebration.

The history of this football game can be traced back in 1902 when it was included to financially support the Rose Parade. It was given the original title, "Tournament East-West football game." The first game held on January 1, 1902 was won by the Michigan team over Stanford University. Michigan was the national champion with an 11-0 victory. For the succeeding 13 years, football was overlooked because primacy was given to other various events like chariot and ostrich races. However, in 1916, football came back to the scene for good. During this match, The State College of Washington, known now as Washington State University defeated Brown University.

The football bowl game previously compered Big Ten and Pac12 conferences champions. But because of its multiple connections to groups deciding on a national champion in Division I FBS, it eventually moved away from its traditional arrangement to ease championship matches in 2002. Managed under the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) system, in 2002 and 2006, the game was selected as its championship game and it hosted the two leading teams named by the BCS system.

Starting 2015, the bowl game joins the College Football Playoff system and is the host of the system's semifinal games every three years. Meanwhile, it will regress to a Pac12/Big Ten competition throughout the non-Playoff years. The official sponsorship name in the 2015 game is the "Rose Bowl Game presented by Northwestern Mutual," which succeeded Vizio, AT&T, Sony, and Citi. Hence, the game will be officially branded as the "College Football Playoff semifinal at the Rose Bowl Game presented by Northwestern Mutual."
